Season Opening Concerts: A Kaleidoscope of Favorite Tunes
A Concert Inspired by Rancho Cordova

Come and enjoy the Symphony's first concerts of the 2023/2024 season, being presented at both the Cordova High Performing Arts Theater on Saturday, Nov.18th at 4pm, and also the next Sunday (Nov.19th) at 4pm at the KP International Market Food Court.

A “Kaleidoscope of Favorite Tunes” features a variety of terrific musical favorites. Featured are “What’s Up At the Symphony?” with cartoon themes you will recognize — as well as some Beatles. You will also hear W.C. Handy’s “St. Louis Blues,” featuring our knockout trumpet section and an arrangement of Aaron Copeland’s “Variations on a Shaker Melody” from “Appalachian Spring.” Also, a familiar favorite is the captivating second movement of Dvorak's New World Symphony, distinguished by its exquisite and lyrical qualities.

Finally, the centerpiece of our concert, and destined to become a Rancho Cordova favorite, is "City Portraits" by our Composer in Residence, Carlos McMillan Fuentes. The symphony commissioned "City Portraits" to celebrate and honor Rancho Cordova’s 20th anniversary in 2023. The suite features three movements which celebrate the people of Rancho Cordova: their pioneering spirit; sense of adventure; commercial daring; and artistic vision.

The first movement called "The Woman at Mills Station", was performed at the city's anniversary celebration on June 30, 2023, to a full house at Cordova High Performing Arts Theater. Since then, McMillan Fuentes has composed two additional movements with more movements likely to follow. The second movement is titled "Pioneers of Sky. and Space" and was inspired by the pioneers in the aerospace industry and the military members who have contributed so much to our country and the community of Rancho Cordova. The third movement is titled "Toccata Koreana". The movement was inspired by the people who visit the commercial innovation that is Koreana Plaza.

For inspiration McMillan Fuentes visited several sites in Rancho Cordova and talked to people about the community. He was also intrigued by the hustle and bustle of shoppers at Koreana Plaza which inspired the percussion lines in "Toccata Koreana"! Don't miss this amazing performance inspired by and composed for the people of Rancho Cordova.
